With rumours of a rift growing between Riyad Mahrez and the Algerian national team, the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) president has provided an update on their star attacker's future with the Desert Foxes.

Since the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, the former Manchester City star has not been selected by his national team. That continental showpiece ended with the north African giants being dumped out at the group stage for a second successive tournament.
That unsuccessful competition saw the two-time African champions part ways with Djamel Belmadi. His successor would be former Switzerland national team boss Vladimir Petkovic.

Since assuming the head coaching position with Algeria, the 60-year-old has not selected national team captain Mahrez. This has reportedly caused tension between the two, but the president of FAF, Walid Sadi, has said that there is no hostility between the two and that fans can expect the Al Ahli man to return for the next international break.
"There's no issue with Riyad Mahrez; the situation has simply been blown out of proportion. I've spoken with the coach (Petkovic) since our arrival in Uganda, and he assured me he would meet Mahrez in the coming days to clear up this matter," the north African executive said after their 2-1 victory over Uganda, as per Afrique Sports.

"It's even possible that Mahrez will return to the national team during the next training camp in September."
