Official: Pirates Announce Big Exit

Orlando Pirates have confirmed a significant departure just two days after their Nedbank Cup final win over Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Buccaneers have announced that assistant manager Sergio Almenara has left the club ahead of the 2024/25 season. 

"This is a decision I took with a heavy heart," the 44-year-old said about his exit, as per Pirates' official website. 

"I have really enjoyed my stay here, but unfortunately, due to personal matters that the club is aware of, I can no longer continue with my job. I have a young family back in Finland. They have been unable to integrate into the country. I would have wished to stay longer, but unfortunately, it's not possible.

"I would like to thank management, the technical team, players, and most importantly the fans for my stay. I will always remain a Buccaneer."

The club also said that the Spaniard had initially put in a request to leave his role earlier this season and that their response was delayed to avoid distraction. 

Pirates thanked the assistant manager for his contribution under head coach Jose Riveiro, with whom he worked closely since 2022. 

The Nedbank Cup champions have stated they will use the upcoming break to make new staff appointments.

"The Club – with consultation of the head coach – will look to use this offseason break to find a suitable replacement/s as well as bolster the backroom staff in the technical, analysis, medical and conditioning departments," the club said.
