Manqele: Chiefs Don't Have BMT

In the aftermath of Kaizer Chiefs' recent 5-1 defeat to DStv Premiership League Champions Mamelodi Sundowns, and their double loss to Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby, Edward Manqele, a former striker for Amakhosi, has pinpointed a significant shortfall in the team's performances: a lack of big match temperament (BMT).

This observation comes at a crucial time as Chiefs reflect on their season's challenges and setbacks. In an exclusive interview with Soccer Laduma, Manqele, who also represented Bafana Bafana, emphasized the importance of players stepping up in critical matches.

"As players you need to rise up to the occasion when needs be. Yes, you have to be on top of your game in every match but there are games where you need to show your big match temperament (BMT) and win the game without even the coaches telling you what to do. That lacked in our players this season. They fell short when they were most needed and that affected the results a lot," Manqele told Soccer Laduma.

"Look at the games against Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and even teams like Chippa United, Stellenbosch FC and even Richards Bay. It was not good on the side of the players at all," Manqele observed.

The former striker's critique sheds light on the psychological aspects of football, where mental strength and character play pivotal roles in determining the outcome of high-stakes matches. According to Manqele, the current squad has struggled to exhibit the necessary resolve and determination that defines winners, especially in clashes that hold significant weight in the league standings and among the fans. Looking ahead, Manqele offered advice on how Amakhosi can salvage their season.

"Now what they need to do is fight until the end and give the supporters the chance of finishing in the top eight. It will be hard if you look at the other teams but if they can win the remaining games that would be possible.

"It's not that they are not good players. It's just that they have failed to show character when needed to do so. Now it's time to finish the season on a high note and move on to next season positively," Manqele concluded.

This candid reflection from a former player highlights the challenges Chiefs face as they navigate the remainder of the season. With the aim of securing a spot in the top eight, the team must now rally, demonstrating the character and resilience that have been missing in their crucial encounters.

As the season draws to a close, Chiefs' response to these challenges will be closely watched by fans and critics alike, hoping for a turnaround that sets a positive tone for the next campaign.
