Motsepe: Top African Sides Pay Players More Than....

CAF president Dr Patrice Motsepe has claimed that top African sides are able to pay better than some European clubs do.

CAF president Dr Patrice Motsepe has claimed that top clubs in Africa are able to pay players more than teams in the likes of Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden do.

Since assuming office as the head of African football's governing body, one of the initiatives the South African executive has championed is paying footballers on the continent a competitive salary level with clubs in Europe.

Throughout history, many African footballers have struggled to sustain themselves beyond their respective football careers because of the low pay on the world's second largest continent.

This has led many to seek greener pastures, in terms of finances, in Europe, but Motsepe has claimed that the newly formed African Football League is seeking to address this issue.

While on a visit to Angola, the former Mamelodi Sundowns chairman explained that during his time in charge of the Tshwane-based side, he was able to distinguish that big African sides were able to offer better salaries to players than clubs in Scandinavia.

"What we have to do is show the players that we can pay them very well and compete with some of the European countries," the 62-year-old told members of the media, as per CAF TV.

"There are some that will get big, big money in the big, big leagues, which is beautiful because we want them to make as much money as possible.

"But I can assure you that between 60% and 80% of the players who play outside of Africa, we can compete with what they are paid, definitely in the Scandinavian countries.

"We use to see how much the highest-paid players get in Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden, and many other countries, and we could compete and pay our African players more than what they were getting in those countries."
