Finidi George will lead Nigeria in their upcoming friendlies against Ghana and Mali.

After Jose Peseiro stepped down as Nigeria boss after losing the 2023 AFCON final, the Super Eagles have confirmed his short-term successor ahead of the international break.

Heading into friendlies against Ghana and Mali, the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has appointed ex-player Finidi George as interim coach.

This follows Peseiro's decision to leave his post after the tournament in the Ivory Coast, though his deal was expiring after the competition anyway.

George has vast experience at the highest level, after playing across multiple top leagues during his career, including LALIGA and the Premier League.

The former winger also represented Nigeria between 1991 and 2002, earning an impressive 62 caps.

A post put out on social media showed George meeting with Nigeria officials and was captioned: "Coach George Finidi has held a meeting with Super Eagles team officials as he leads the Super Eagles in international friendlies against Ghana and Mali."

Speaking in an interview, George, who worked as an assistant under Peseiro, insisted the Super Eagles will take their upcoming friendlies seriously.

"Definitely as a coach there is responsibility and that's what we do. We have to be calm and do the job properly. A lot of Nigerians are watching, so, we want to make them proud. The AFCON is gone and these are two games that are crucial, we will take them seriously and make sure we get the best out of them," he said, according to PUNCH

"The players are doing a good job in training. It's not that intense because most of them are just traveling in. The team spirit is good and I'm happy about it."
