On the weekend, the Football Federation of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania (FFRIM) confirmed the death of U21 shot-stopper Mohamed El Mokhtar, who passed on after initially slipping into a coma.
The goalkeeper was involved in a horror collision with a colleague at Mauritanian club AS Douanes, suffering a concussion before being rushed to hospital.
Following his passing, the FFRIM cancelled the Mauritanian Cup final between Douanes and Nouadhibou, which was scheduled for Saturday.
"The FFRIM mourns the death of national team goalkeeper Mohamed El Mokhtar, who passed away this Saturday morning in Nouakchott," the football body's statement read, according to KingFut.
"The deceased young man was known for the great love he had for his country as well as his talent, his commitment and his discipline.
"He set an example among his colleagues for his sincerity in work and professional commitment, with high morals and great respect.
"Despite his young age, he quickly moved up the goalkeeping ranks until he quickly reached the squad of the first national team.
