Khan Picks His Top 3 Soweto Derby Performers

Patrick Maswanganyi

Former Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Farouk Khan has picked his top three performers from the past weekend's Soweto Derby, and they are all from Orlando Pirates.

An entertaining match at FNB Stadium produced five goals and there were quite a few stand out performers, as the Buccaneers came from behind to secure a 3-2 victory in front of a crowd of just under 87 000.

The man who set up the winning goal, Patrick Maswanganyi, stood out tops for Khan on the day. The former SuperSport United player was named Man of the Match.

"I think Patrick Maswanganyi did well. He controlled the game for Pirates. Besides the assist, he was just the difference in making the team good going forward and creating those killer passes that exposes the defence. He was outstanding, from his technique, his vision... His creativity is second to none," Khan said to the Siya crew, before talking about two-goal hero Monnapule Saleng.

Saleng made only his seventh start of the season over the weekend and made the most of the opportunity, bagging two sublime goals as he took advantage of some lacklustre defending from Chiefs.

"Saleng was good as well. Coming from a long break, it's always difficult to hit the ground running. He took both goals very well. He stood out for me. (Olisa) Ndah was an unsung hero at the back. He made a difference defensively for Pirates when Chiefs came with that counter attack and when balls were played over the top. So, it's Maswanganyi, Saleng and Ndah.

Khan, meanwhile, not impressed with any of the Chiefs players on the day.

"If you ask me which Kaizer Chiefs player, I'd have to think very hard. (Ashley) Du Preez scored two goals, but he did not do well. They lost possession carelessly and they play a different brand than what we know Chiefs to be about. There is a lot of dependency on their wingers."
