Inter Miami Accused Of Breaking Messi Clause In Contract

Inter Miami are accused of breaking an agreement stipulating Lionel Messi would feature in a pre-season friendly in Hong Kong.

MLS side Inter Miami have been accused of breaking a certain contract clause relating to Lionel Messi.

On Sunday, the Herons beat a Hong Kong XI 4-1 in a pre-season friendly, a game in which the former Barcelona No. 10 did not feature.

Both Messi and Luis Suarez were left on the bench for the full 90 minutes, much to the anguish of the attending fans, who booed Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham after the match.

Head coach Gerardo Martino later explained that he did not want to risk the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner, although that has still not satisfied Hong Kong's secretary for culture, sports and tourism, Kevin Yeung.

"We immediately requested them to explore other remedies, such as Messi appearing on the field to interact with his fans and receiving the trophy," Yeung said, as per France 24.

"Unfortunately, as you all see, this did not work out.

"One of the key terms of our funding agreement with [organisers] Tatler Asia was for Messi to participate in the match for at least 45 minutes, subject to fitness and safety considerations.

"We haven't paid any money yet. In the coming weeks, we will further liaise with the organiser, Tatler Asia.

"We will discuss the performance of the whole event and we will make a decision on how to deal with the sponsorship."

Many of those who attended the game have requested refunds on their match tickets, while some were seen breaking promotional material, which featured Messi, at the stadium.
