Riveiro Reveals League Plans For Pirates

Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has reiterated the importance of the DStv Premiership title as he aims for more success with the club.

Having already won the MTN8 this season and after a perfect start in the Carling Knockout as the Buccaneers defeated Cape Town Spurs 2-0 at the Orlando Stadium on Friday night to advance to the quarterfinals, Riveiro says the league remains the most important competition to aim for.

Because of their schedule that has been hectic in the different competitions, Bucs last played a league match exactly a month ago when they lost to defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns, and as a result they find themselves 14th on the standings with several matches to play to catch up.

"The league is the most important competition, (and) it goes without saying. 30 games, away, home against everybody, every type of circumstances, hot, raining, so it's the most important competition. We really want to find our rhythm also in that competition. In the last 65 or 66 days, we played two league games, which is very unusual. Today, we played our fourth competition in two months and a half. We try to keep the level in every tournament that we play, we try to do our best. Mentally, it's difficult to face these amount of competitions in a short space of time but trust me that our intention is to be in the same level in our league games," said Riveiro, speaking to journalists after the Spurs match.

"We're now 100% focused in the AmaZulu (game) on Tuesday. Personally, and I think that my opinion will be shared by every other coach in the world, the league is the most important tournament. It doesn't mean that the other tournaments are not important like this one, I think every competition has relevance. It's an opportunity to improve the history of the club," the coach said.
