The Knights of Najd dismissed Frenchman Rudi Garcia towards the end of the previous season and have since been without a permanent manager.
The Public Investment Fund-owned side ultimately finished the 2022/23 season as runners-up behind Al Ittihad, and with the appointment of Ronaldo's compatriot, they will be looking to go one further and win the Saudi top division title for the first time since 2019.
The 61-year-old head coach was mostly recently coaching in Brazil with Botafogo, and brings with him a wealth of experience having coached all over the world, including at prominent clubs such as FC Porto and Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk.

Castro's appointment comes shortly after the club added another star to their ranks in Croatia midfielder Marcelo Brozovic. The deep-lying playmaker arrived from Inter Milan after helping the Nerazzurri reach the 2022/23 UEFA Champions League final.
