After coming through the club's academy, the English dead-ball specialist quickly formed an important part of the United side that went on to claim a famous treble in the 1999/2000 season after beating Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League final in Barcelona.
Beckham became popular for his ability as a footballer while representing United and England, but his star also grew for his interests beyond the sport, and his relationship with and subsequent marriage to former Spice Girls member Victoria Beckham.
In 2003, as Ferguson reportedly began to become frustrated with Beckham and what he believed were off-field distractions for the iconic No. 7, the Scotsman kicked a boot in his direction, hitting him in the face, in a post-match dressing room incident that signalled the start of the end for the player at Old Trafford.
Beckham went on to join Real Madrid at the end of the 2002/03 campaign, but has recently claimed he had no intention to ever represent another club, admitting he struggled to follow his former side after his exit.
"I always felt I would start my career at Manchester United and end my career at Manchester United," he said, speaking at St Johns Wood United Synagogue, according to The Athletic.
"I had no intention of leaving at any point and I didn't want to play for any other club.
"For the next three years [after leaving], I couldn't even watch United on television.
"Being at United, and supporting them, for as long as I had, it was obviously upsetting."
