Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has heaped praise on Erling Haaland, who became the all-time record goalscorer in a single Premier League season on Wednesday night.

The 22-year-old has made history in his debut campaign in England, having now scored 35 league goals following his chipped finish in the Citizens' 3-0 victory over West Ham United.

Haaland has surpassed legendary strikers Andy Cole and Alan Shearer, who each reached 34 strikes before the Premier League formed, back then playing in a 22-team division.

Guardiola appeared delighted for the ex-Borussia Dortmund forward in his post-match press conference, saying he believes Haaland is capable of beating his own record in the future.

"It was special – he deserved it," he said, according to the Daily Mail.

"Without the team he couldn't do it, but he is a special striker.

"This record will be broken sooner or later, maybe by him in the future. We're very pleased for him because it's a joy to work with him and everyone is happy to have him."

Haaland was also given an impromptu guard of honour from his teammates after the game.

"It was really painful, everyone hit me on the back," the striker said.

"I don't think of these records, I'll sleep tonight and then I think about three points against Leeds. I will go home now and play some video games. I cannot say which, it's too embarrassing."
