Haaland: What I Told Pep When He Took Me Off

Erling Haaland reacts to being taken off by Pep Guardiola in Manchester City's 7-0 win over Leipzig in the UEFA Champions League.

Erling Haaland has explained what he told Pep Guardiola when he was substituted after scoring five goals in Manchester City's 7-0 win over RB Leipzig in the UEFA Champions League.

The Norwegian was on fire on Tuesday as the Citizens dismantled the Bundesliga side in the second leg of the round of 16 at the Etihad Stadium with a five-goal haul, including a first-half hat-trick.

Haaland broke three records as City equalled their own record win in the competition, but appeared to suggest after the game that he was slightly disappointed to be taken off in the second half.

Speaking in a post-match interview, the 22-year-old revealed that he told Guardiola that he would have preferred to stay on in order to add one more goal to his tally.

"I've told Pep Guardiola when I went off: 'I would love to score a double hat-trick!'. But what can I do?" he said.

"I really love this competition, I love the Champions League."

Guardiola, meanwhile, was unsurprisingly full of praise for City's highest-paid player.

"Haaland has unbelievable mentality. We're so happy with this boy," he added.

"We didn't know him [before the signing] but Erling is always happy, always funny, he's nice with his teammates."

Haaland has now scored 39 goals in all competitions so far this season in just 36 matches and will be looking to continue his form in the quarter-final stage of the tournament.
