Transfer Update: Lionel Messi

Transfer Update: Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi is reportedly edging closer to moving back to Argentina and playing with his boyhood club.

With Lionel Messi reportedly leaning towards a Paris Saint-Germain exit at the end of the campaign, here is the latest regarding the football icon's future.

Liverpool 'Make' Bombshell Decision About Salah's Future

It seems that after two seasons in the French capital, the diminutive Argentine could be saying goodbye to PSG soon, with contract talks having been ongoing throughout the season but to no avail.

What seems to be gaining momentum, however, are rumours of Messi's next potential club.

Of late, Barcelona and Inter Miami have been the teams mooted to land the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner's signature next, but now it looks as though a new frontrunner has emerged in the form of Newell's Old Boys.

Before making his way to Barca's famed La Masia academy as a 13-year-old, Messi spent his youth career playing for the red and black of Rosario, and now the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner could be returning to join the team's senior side.

According to Mundo Deportivo, after Argentina's World Cup triumph in Qatar, Messi and Newell's head coach Gabriel Heinze met in the PSG's stars mansion in La Fortaleza, where the former Manchester United left-back congratulated him on achieving his ultimate dream of holding football's biggest prize aloft.

Having played together in the national team for a number of years, sharing a World Cup dressing room in 2006 and in 2010, they could soon be reunited once again, this time as player and manager.

It is rumoured that Messi interested in plying his trade outside of Europe before he retires, and Newell's could provide him with the best opportunity to do that.

FIFA The Best Men's Award Winner 'Leaked'

While his club future remains uncertain, what is likely is that Messi will don the famous red and black of the Argentine giants for Maxi Rodriguez's tribute match in the coming off-season.

That game, which will raise funds for charity, could perhaps be the first of many the Rosario native plays for his boyhood club over the next couple of years.
