Rulani: We Pack A Punch When The Opposition Requires Us To

PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA - JANUARY 16: Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rhulani Mokwena and Aubrey Modiba during the DStv Premiership match between Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on January 16, 2023 in Pretoria, South Africa. (Photo by Lefty Shivambu/Gallo Images)

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena was pleased with the fight shown by his players during the win over SuperSport United.

Neo Maema's lone goal gave Sundowns the bragging rights in the Tshwane derby on Monday evening.

Mokwena suggested that it's a hard-earned victory, as Matsatsantsa head coach Gavin Hunt has not won four league titles by fluke.

"Congratulations to the entire Mamelodi Sundowns family, congratulations to the players, they fought very hard, top of the table clash, number one versus number two (three)," Mokwena said on SuperSport TV.

"So you can expect what we saw today, chances on both sides, quality on the pitch on both sides and Gavin Hunt has not won four league titles by chance hey."

When asked if SuperSport's set up caught them by surprise, he added", No, the only difference was [Thapelo] Maseko playing with the left foot on the right and normally Gavin likes to have the wide full-back, the wide winger to be able to deliver balls into the box.

"So [Gamphani] Lungu was on the left with a right foot and Maseko was on the right on the opposite side, so they played a little bit inverted.

"We struggled a little bit with Zeida's [Aubrey Modiba] position because Zeida's position was for a winger to go on the outside and deliver the cross and not for a winger to come inside and put the ball inside.

"So we had to address that a little bit and also the centre-backs needed to be five or ten metres a little bit high up so that they could provoke the press.

"But look, it happens, we're happy with the fight, we fight. One thing you can never ever...we play but we also fight. We pack a punch when the opposition requires us to pack a punch.

"And congratulations to the players and congratulations to Masandawana supporters."
