Salah Makes Champions League History

During Liverpool's 7-1 thumping of Rangers on Wednesday night, Mohamed Salah came off the bench to make UEFA Champions League history.

The Reds' 2022/23 season has not got off to the best of starts, with the six-time European champions languishing in 10th position in the Premier League, and when Jurgen Klopp's men took on Giovanni van Bronckhorst's Rangers at Ibrox Stadium, it initially looked as if Liverpool's Champions League campaign was about to take a turn for the worst.

Scott Arfield opened the scoring for the Scottish outfit in the 17th minute, but the English side's misery was short-lived, with Roberto Firmino equalising seven minutes later. The Brazilian would find the back of the net again, before Darwin Nunez put Klopp's side up by two.

From then on it was the Salah show. The winger came on for Nunez in the 68th minute and made an instant impact. Seven minutes into his introduction, the 30-year-old found the back of the net, and six minutes and 12 seconds later, the two-time CAF African Player of the Year had his hat-trick.

The Egyptian's triple is the quickest in Champions League history, breaking the previous record of eight minutes set by Bafetimbi Gomes for Olympique Lyon 11 years ago.

The ex-Basel man's three strikes also means he is now the most prolific player from an English side in the tournament's history, having scored 38 UCL goals for the Merseyside club.

His Portuguese colleague Diogo Jota also achieved a remarkable feat by assisting all three of Salah's goals in Glasgow. It was the first time a player had assisted a teammate's complete hat-trick in the UCL since March 2012, when Franck Ribery assisted three Mario Gomez strikes for Bayern Munich against Basel, as per Opta Sports.
