Jesus: What Pep Did That Made Me Leave Man City

Jesus: What Pep Did That Made Me Leave Man City

Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus has revealed what Pep Guardiola did that ultimately led to him deciding to leave Manchester United in the recent transfer window.

Haaland 'Reveals' Reason Behind Joining Man City

Following Sergio Aguero's departure from the Citizens in 2021, the Brazilian might have been under the impression Guardiola would look to him to lead the line.

While Jesus did make 41 appearances last season, he completed 90 minutes on just 15 occasions across all competitions, with Guardiola often opting to use an attacking midfielder in a false nine position.

The Selecao forward has now hinted that those decisions taken by the Spanish tactician contributed to his call to move on, something he believes the ex-Barcelona manager understood.

"The thing was the way [Guardiola] understands football and what he wanted," he told ESPN Brasil.

"Then it was up to you to accept it or not. If you don't accept it, 'thank you' and let's go for another challenge.

"I accepted it for a while, but there came a moment when I said: 'I want another thing for myself.' I thanked him, 'thanks for everything', he understood, and we moved on.

"It is different here at Arsenal. The football is different – different players, different ways to play.

"At City, it was different. The striker didn't touch the ball that much, you see this by watching the games.

"And, when it was time to touch the ball, it was not the striker, because [Guardiola] ended up putting a midfielder to come closer. OK, fine. So, I decided to change."

Jesus scored 95 goals and assisted a further 46 strikes in 236 appearances in his five-year spell with City, winning 10 trophies.
