Another weekend fixture and another loss for Maritzburg United, this time a 4-2 defeat to Shaun Bartlett's University of Pretoria. This is heartbreaking from a number of angles. The Team of Choice remains rooted to the foot of the ABSA Premiership; however, we all have to take a moment to applaud the heart showed by the boys – at least they put on a spectacle for the fans. They may be a high-losing team but it is also a high-scoring team.
"I love my team, I'm proud of them."
These were the words of Maritzurg United fan Ryan Holtes after their weekend loss to Tuks.
"Ja, we may lose all our games but at least I get to watch some beautiful football in Maritzburg," he continued.
"My wife used to find soccer very boring but then I started taking her to the Harry Gwala Stadium.
"She loves it now, it's a pure spectacle. The team scores a lot of goals… We also get scored against a lot, but at least we get some quality entertainment when we buy a ticket."
The Team of Choice may be rooted like a rock to the bottom of the table, but they have scored more goals than the five teams ahead of them in the league. They have even scored the same amount of goals as fifth-placed Mpumalanga Black Aces (28).
"It will be a sad day if Maritzburg get relegated; it will be particularly sad for KZN soccer, because we really are a soccer-loving province, but, hey, I go to bed happy every night," he added.
"All you can ask as a fan is to see some entertaining football; wins and losses come and go, but I want to be entertained, and that's what my team does for me."
What do you think of Maritzburg United's prospects of staying in top-flight football this year? What do you think of their style of play?
