The 23-year-old was expected to play a big role for Bafana in the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) that is starting on Saturday.
Shongwe's agent, Jazzman Mahlakgane, confirmed to the Siya crew that he has already spoken to the player about the extent of his injury.
"I spoke to Jabu and he told me that he injured his groin. He will be out for 10 days, so they (Bafana) had to get someone else (Matthew Pattison). They took him to a scan and it was confirmed. So Gordon (Igesund) decided that he would get another player. But the boy will be fine," said Mahlakgane.
Shongwe was called into Bafana alongside Sundowns' teammates Hlompho Kekana, Katlego Mashego, Tebogo Langerman and Bryce Moon.
The Witbank-born player is expected to miss his team's trip to Zambia. Sundowns confirmed on the club's official website yesterday (Tuesday) that the Chloorkop side is expected to play three matches against teams from Zambia.
The team is expected to leave on Friday, and is scheduled to return on January 19.
