The veteran defender, who was recently given a one-year extension to his contract, has injured his right ankle at training.
A source at the club believes that he could be out for between six weeks and two months depending on the extent of the injury.
"Yes he is injured and I think it will take between six weeks and two months before he can come back. It's also about his age - if he was young it could have healed much earlier, but since he is a veteran it will take a bit of time," said the source.
Called for comment, Pirates PRO Mickey Modisane couldn't confirm the length of time that Lekgwathi faces on the sidelines.
"Where did you get that? Well let me talk to our medical team and then I will let you know how long he will he be out," Modisane explained.
Lekgwathi arrived at training wearing a moonboot on Monday, and he is quoted on the club's official Twitter account as saying, "The boot just helps remind me to keep it steady. I could train today but the pain would be too much. So I'm taking it easy."
"I had injections in my foot so usually the ankle is weak after that. If I step funny then the pain is worse."
"It has been troubling me since last season. I have a footballer's ankle. They never 100% fine."
