Ncikazi: Why Young Pirates Won't Be Overwhelmed

Orlando Pirates assistant coach Mandla Ncikazi has explained why he does not think the pressure of having to perform in the Soweto derby will have an effect on their young stars who are currently playing a big role in the team.

Club products Relebohile Mofokeng and Mohau Nkota have been colossal figures for the Buccaneers in attack this season, often combining to either set up their opponents or find the back of the net themselves.

As the Soweto derby approaches, there's good reason for Pirates supporters to believe that these players can unlock a Kaizer Chiefs defence that has only kept a clean sheet twice this season. And with valuable experience gained from playing against top clubs such as Al Ahly in the CAF Champions League, the youngsters are not likely to be overwhelmed by the occasion.

Chiefs themselves have young stars who have played a big role in carrying the team. Mduduzi Shabalala, Wandile Duba and Mfundo Vlakazi have a combined nine goals in the league this season.

Duba, though, has been ruled out of the derby with an injury, while it's unclear at this stage if Shabalala will be fit enough to play having been out with a knock recently. Vilakazi is available and could get an opportunity. Midfielder Samkelo Zwane is another who will be itching for an opportunity to play for Amakhosi in this big encounter.

Ncikazi gave his opinion on the rise of players who have come through the Diski Challenge and believes they are ready to perform in the derby.

"It's impressive what our team has done. In one match, we played seven DDC players. The opponents (Chiefs) are also doing the same. The experience they have gathered in us playing in Africa and against the biggest teams in Africa, I think it's enough experience. I don't see them being overshadowed by the moment. We believe in them and the coach trusts them. If given an opportunity, I am sure they will perform," Ncikazi said during the Soweto derby press conference on Tuesday afternoon.

Pirates host Amakhosi at FNB Stadium on Saturday.
