As Orlando Pirates prepare to play their latest Betway Premiership match this weekend, statistics show just how much the Soweto giants have improved since coach Jose Riveiro's first campaign at the club.
The Buccaneers are on 33 points after 14 matches and have an opportunity to move closer to 40 when they take on Cape Town City at Orlando Stadium this weekend, a club they lost to in the Mother City in January. They have scored 26 goals, making them the second highest scoring club in the league behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who have netted 38 times.

The points this season show just how much the Buccaneers have improved under the tutelage of their Spanish mentor. In his first season, 2022/23, Riveiro had a slow start in the Premiership.
In the first 15 matches, Pirates were able to collect just 19 points. In this period, they won five matches, drew four and lost six. They also were not so ruthless in front of goal, netting just 19 goals.
Last season, Riveiro's second at the helm, the Buccaneers made some improvements in their first 15 matches of the campaign. They collected 25 points, winning seven times, drawing four and losing on four occasions.

This season, they have won 11 matches and have been on the losing side three times. They have not drawn any matches. While this shows how much they have improved, the important thing for the Soweto giants would be to get their hands on the title. That's the big prize they are chasing, but Tshwane giants Sundowns are not making it easy for them.
A win over City will ensure they do not fall further behind Sundowns.
