The police have confirmed that former Bidvest Wits and Orlando Pirates defender Patrick Phungwayo will remain behind bars after his court appearance on Thursday for alleged house breaking.
Phungwayo was arrested on Tuesday in Lombardy East, allegedly for a string of armed robberies.
Having appeared at the Johannesburg Magistrates' Court on Thursday, the 33-year-old who also played for Free State Stars in his career, and previously had a stint with Panionios in Greece will have his formal bail application next week, while the police continue with their investigation on the charges that he and his co-accused are facing.
As confirmed by the Hawks, Phungwayo was one of the two suspects arrested for allegedly being in possession of three firearms, house breaking tools, gloves, balaclavas and a stolen television set and cellphones.
They were allegedly driving in an Audi which had false registration plates, and as confirmed by the authorities, the vehicle had been robbed in Bramley earlier this year.
It has also been confirmed by the police that a Kia Picanto was also found on the same premises, and also had false registration plates, and was robbed from its owner in Linden in June.
Phungwayo and his co-accused, according to the authorities, are believed to be linked to a number of hijackings and armed robberies, as per preliminary investigation of the police.
The Hawks, through Colonel Katlego Mogale, confirmed that Phungwayo and co-accused David Sekgobela did indeed appear in court today and their case has been postponed to Monday for further investigation and formal bail application next Thursday.
"The two suspects, Patrick Phungwayo (33) and his accomplice, David Sekgobela (46) appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrates Court today on charges of house robbery, possession of suspected stolen property, possession of suspected stolen/hijacked motor vehicles and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition," confirmed the Hawks in a statement.
"Their case was postponed to Monday, 22 November for further investigation and formal bail application on Thursday, 25 November 2021," reads the statement.
