Former Bidvest Wits midfielder Papy Faty has died after he collapsed during a soccer match in eSwatini earlier today, the Siya crew has sadly learnt.
Only just 28-years old, the tough as nails Burundi international had been diagnosed with a heart condition three years ago, leading to his departure from the Clever Boys, though he was still determined to pursue a career in football.
In an interview with Soccer Laduma yesterday, Faty spoke about having to overcome the news that he "would die" if he played football ever again.
Details remain a bit sketchy regarding his death, but it is understood the player collapsed during a match for his club Malanti Chiefs in eSwatini, where he confirmed the league was semi-professional.
During the exclusive interview, Faty told Soccer Laduma how he was defying the medical odds by continuing to be active as a footballer against advice from doctors. The Burundian played for Real Kings in the NFD before his contract there was also terminated because of his heart condition.
The Siya crew sends condolences to the Faty family and those who knew and loved him in the football fraternity. Rest in peace.
