DStv Premiership Report: Maritzburg United v SuperSport United 15 February 2022

DStv Premiership Report: Maritzburg United v SuperSport United 15 February 2022

Maritzburg United snapped their 10-game winless run in the DStv Premiership after defeating SuperSport United 2-1 on Tuesday evening.

Result: Maritzburg United 2-1 SuperSport United

Date: 15 February 2022

Venue: Harry Gwala Stadium

Matsatsantsa were unchanged from the side that won against the same opposition in the Nedbank Cup, as Iqraam Rayners and Ghampani Lungu led the attack while Maritzburg gave new signing Steven Pereira his debut in the line-up.

The Team of Choice almost had a perfect start after Friday Samu met Clayton Daniels' cross with a good header in the six-yard box but goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was equal to the task.

Ernst Middendorp's charges gained momentum after that and Nicholus Lukhubeni had a chance to break the deadlock for the hosts in the 24th minute after a cross by Travis Graham in the box but he dragged his shot wide.

Maritzburg eventually broke the deadlock on the stroke of halftime after Samu made a good turn from Lukhubeni's cross and fired a strike past Williams at the near post.

Kudakwashe Mahachi replaced Rasebotja Selaelo for the visitors at halftime and managed to get back on level terms through Jesse Donn's looping header shortly after the break.

Both sides were finding chances, as the game opened up and Maritzburg restored their lead 19 minutes before time after Rowan Human fired home a low strike in the box from a cut-back by Samu.

Middendorp's troops frustrated SuperSport by pressing them high with time winding down, especially after the introduction of Leletu Skelem and Ryan Rae in midfield, who both replaced Tawanda Macheke and Travis Graham in tactical moves.

Matsatsantsa were not finding attacking momentum in the dying minutes, as Maritzburg held on to move up to 12th on the log and ended their ten-game winless run in the league while SuperSport dropped down to seventh on the table.
