Motsepe: The Successful Days Of Chiefs Are Coming

Most of the attention in South Africa has been on Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, but CAF president Patrice Motsepe is delighted to see Kaizer Chiefs making some progress with a possible return to continental football next season.

Difficult as things may have been, Amakhosi booked themselves a spot in the Nedbank Cup final against Orlando Pirates. And with the Buccaneers set to compete in the CAF Champions League again next season, Amakhosi have one foot in the Confederation Cup.

Winning the Nedbank Cup would guarantee them a spot in the continental competition while finishing as runners-up would mean they have to see where the Buccaneers finish in the league before their place is sealed.

Speaking at the sponsorship renewal announcement with African Global Logistics (AGL) in Sandton, Johannesburg, Motsepe did not hide the fact that he is pleased to see Amakhosi making progress.

“I’m happy Kaizer Chiefs are back in the CAF Confederation Cup. South African football requires success from Kaizer Chiefs and I am proud of the work the Motaung family has been doing. And of course, Kaizer Motaung is in a class of his own. The successful days of Kaizer Chiefs will be coming and I am proud to say they are here. They will be even more successful in future," Motsepe told media.

"I'm also proud of all the other clubs in the Premier Soccer League because a successful national team requires a very competitive and successful club football. What I'd like to see more is the private sector because many of the families involved in football use family money to keep the clubs going.

"We need to get more private sector to sponsor the football clubs and to sponsor the professional soccer league and also invest in our youth. You can't look at football as what happens in the 90 minutes. Of course, we focus on the 90 minutes and that's the ultimate excitement, but it's also about our young football players who use the incomce they get to maintain themselves and help their families."
