Downs eased through the opening two rounds, first beating Chippa United 2-0 and then thrashing Free State Stars 6-1.
The Brazilians comfortably brushed aside SuperSport United 3-1 in the semi-final and humbled Kaizer Chiefs by the same margin in the final, and Zungu thinks Downs' performances throughout the competition make them well-deserved champions.
"We worked hard to be in the final and I think we deserved the trophy, looking at how we performed throughout the competition," Zungu told Soccer Laduma.
"(After the game) it was a celebration! We were all singing and dancing. It was a great mood. Everyone was happy and we just enjoyed ourselves.
"You know, it took 17 years for us to win this trophy, but that motivated us to go out there and do it. We were confident because we had been scoring goals in this competition, so it's great that we finally won this trophy!"
