Alex Costa Could Get A Call Up To The South African National Team
Alex Costa, a young South African centre back playing in the United States of America, could land himself a national team call-up, with Thabo Senong having been in touch. The 22-year-old centre back left South Africa after obtaining a scholarship with Auburn Montgomery Warhawks in Alabama and is currently in the process of getting a degree while playing football over in the States. Costa, who was in the youth ranks at Bidvest Wits before his move overseas, believes that it's been a great experience for him to study while still developing his football. Read: Chiefs Wait On New Signing Speaking to the Siya crew, he said, "Getting the opportunity to earn a degree and to do that through football is a blessing… I never looked at going to America until I got approached by the assistant coach of the team that I'm playing for. Having all my studies covered while still playing football was what I wanted in my next chapter, as we all know how unpredictable football is. "I'll be graduating with my Business Science degree specialising in Management this December then looking to continue my footballing career thereafter. Whether it is in South Africa or in Europe, I'm just eager to push myself and grow more as a player." Discussing his upbringing in the American college system, the central defender explained, "Having played my youth football at Bidvest Wits academy for three years as well being part of the Under 17 South African National team, these aspects provided a great platform for my next challenge in the US. A completely different style of football in the States has helped me as a player, as well as playing with quality players from all over the globe. "As coach Thabo Senong has told me, education is a fundamental aspect (of) life, and to have included both in this current chapter has been fantastic and I am truly grateful." Lastly, on the benefits of the route, Costa urged his peers back home in Mzansi to take the opportunity to study if it is handed to them, expressing the importance of having a back up plan. He concluded by saying, "This path is growing rapidly with fellow young South African football players once they complete their Matric, and I cannot express the importance of this journey. It is extremely tough and a massive sacrifice to leave everything behind, but creates so (many) opportunities for self-development and growth in various aspects. "The studying is a hindering factor in football, however being patient and believing that things will all work out in the end, is what I always tell myself. I've set myself goals that I'm constantly striving to achieve, and one of them will be reached this December."
