Matsatsantsa were forcing errors from the City defence, who looked to build from the back in the opening 10 minutes but could not capitalise on their chances.

After 15 minutes, both sides were creating opportunities going forward, although they were not clinical in front of goal.

Taariq Fielies should have given Benni McCarthy's charges the lead in the 20th minute after a clear opportunity inside the box but blasted his strike over the crossbar.

Five minutes later, Evans Rusike had a chance for United after angling a shot from just outside the box but Citizens shot-stopper Sage Stephens made a good save.

Thabo Nodada had a chance to break the deadlock for the hosts in the 36th minute after going clear on goal but he guided his effort wide.

There were end-to-end attacks in the closing stages of the first stanza but the two sides lacked the quality in the final third and they went into the break scoreless.

City showed positive intent in the opening 10 minutes after the break but rushed their attacks, which did not help their cause.

Thuso Phala should have broken the deadlock for the visitors in the 68th minute with a chance inside the box after he was set up by Richard Boateng, but he fired wide.

The woodwork came to City's rescue in the 73rd minute as Clayton Daniels' header inside the box hit the upright with Stephens well beaten.

Kaitano Tembo's men had the upper hand with five minutes left to play but luck was not on their side up front as the encounter finished goalless.
