Surprise Wins It For Sundowns

Result: Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 Free State Stars

Mamelodi Sundowns beat Free State Stars 2-1 at Loftus Stadium on Wednesday night in the ABSA Premiership, after substitute Surprise Moriri scored with three minutes to go.

The win not only moves Sundowns to the top of the table, it means they stand a good chance of winning the first quarter Q-Innovation prize.(Only Orlando Pirates can overtake them if they win all five of their games-in-hand.)

Both sides had plenty of opportunties during the game but failed to take their chances, until Moriri pounced to steal the points for Sundowns.

Camaldine Abraw had the first attempt at goal in the fifth minute but his shot went wide.

In the eight minute Hlompho Kekana tried a shot from outside the area, but it sailed wide of the goal.

Sundowns had a good chance in in the 12th minute when Alje Schut headed down a free kick, but Cuthbert Malajila couldn't get a touch onto the ball and it bounced out wide of the goal.

In the 21st minute Malajila had another chance, but his header from inside the box went over the goal.

In the 24th minute Luyolo Nomandela tried a shot from far outside the box, but he skied his shot and it went over the goal.

Sundowns went into a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute through Malajila, who headed past Daniel Agyei from a Dove Wome corner.

Bongani Zungu got forward for Sundowns in the 40th minute but his final shot went straight to Agyei, who saved.

In the 42nd minute Kekana tried a shot from just outside the area, but his shot was deflected out for a corner.

From the resulting corner Wome almost scored directly from the set piece, but his cross hit the post and went out.

Ea Lla Koto went close to finding the equalizer just before half-time but Abraw's shot from inside the box went just wide

In the 48th minute Anthony Laffor did well to beat a defender, but he dragged his shot from just outside the area across the goal and wide.

Seconds later Wome had a chance on the other end after a great run, but his shot was saved by Agyei.

Danny Venter tried a long range shot in the 50th minute but it went straight at Kennedy Mweene.

Free State Stars grabbed an equalizer in the 51st minute when Abraw tapped in Mongezi Bobe's great cross to make it 1-1.

Nomandela sent in a good shot from outside the box in the 54th minute, but Mweene was able to make a great save as he touched the ball over the goal.

Substitute Mthokozisi Yende tried a shot with almost his first touch of the ball, but his attempt from outside the box went straight at Mweene.

Laffor tried to put the Brazilians back in the lead in the 62nd minute, but his shot took a deflection and wide and high.

Four minutes later Laffor made a good run forward and unleashed another shot, but it went wide to the right.

Substitute Jabulani Shongwe tried a long range effort in the 71st minute but it went straight at Agyei.

Stars substitute Basit Adam chose to shoot when he had a man in space in the 73rd minute, and it went over, and seconds later Yende tested Mweene, but the Sundowns keeper saved at the near post.

Angelo Kerspruy went close in the 78th minute as he tried to lob the ball over Mweene, but the keeper got a touch and was able to recover the ball a few seconds later.

After just coming on as a substitute, veteran Sundowns midfielder Surprise Moriri put the Brazilians 2-1 up in the 87th minute, as he pulled down a ball from Malajila and poked it into the net.

Venter tried a long range shot just into extra time, but his effort went straight at Mweene.

Two minutes into extra Laffor dribbled across half the field, but his final shot lacked power and Agyei was able to get down and save.
