Chiefs, Pirates To Face Barca’s Rivals?
South Africa’s Soweto giants, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, look set to face La Liga outfit, Espanyol, in a preseason tournament next month.
The Spanish outfit, who are the local rivals of FC Barcelona, announced on their club website that they will be taking on Chiefs, Pirates and Kano Pillars of Nigeria in the Amic Cup next month, however, neither South African side has confirmed it.
A statement on the club’s website said, “Espanyol's second tour will take them to South Africa to compete in the cup 'AMIC CUP 2016' in which, in addition to the white and blue team, will participate Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, both from South Africa, and Kano Pillars (Nigeria).
“The first match will be held on August 12 in Durban (Moses Mabhida Stadium) and the second match will be played on August 14 in Port Elizabeth (Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium). Later this month the draw for the tournament matches and schedules will be held.”
The Siya spoke to the La Liga offices in Johannesburg, who confirmed that the games were on the cards, but that nothing had been finalised yet, although the Siya crew will continue to look into matter to see if the friendlies will take place or not.
