FC Barcelona legend Xavi Hernandez has revealed that Louis van Gaal used to humiliate him in front of the team.
The Dutchman gave the Spanish midfielder his first-team debut with the Catalan giants and the 35-year-old still has a lot of affection for his former boss.
"I will remember him all my life, but for better, not worse," Xavi told Marca.
"He was very direct. One day he would bury you and humiliate you in front of the group and the next day he would tell me I was Zidane. That is the way he is and in time it has a positive effect.
"Under him I went from playing at Old Trafford to going to play at Alcoyano (third division) when he dropped me back down to Barca B."
Xavi also insisted something must have worsened the relationship between Van Gaal and former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes.
"I don't know what happened," he added.
"Van Gaal helped Victor go to United, but something happened between the two of them. They are both very strong characters."
