It's Thursday again and Supporters Club takes you down the memory lane. So much has happened in South African football over the years. Today we take you back to the 1988 Bob Save Super Bowl final between the two Soweto giants, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.
Back then, the rules of the tournament were that if there was a draw after full time, then there would be a replay. The match was played at a packed Ellis Park Stadium on 26 November 1988, and the game ended in a 0-0 stalemate.
The replay took place a few days later, on 3 December, at the, once again, fully packed Ellis Park Stadium. The game lived up to the spectators' expectations as both teams scored a goal in the first half, through Mike "Sporo" Mangena (Chiefs) and Lawrence "Killer the Queen" Maake (Pirates).
The second half did not produce any goals, though, but in extra time Basil Steenkamp scored and sealed the victory for Ezimnyama ngenkani.
The final score read: Pirates 2-1 Kaizer Chiefs, and the Buccaneers were crowned 1988 Bob Save Super Bowl Champions! What a game that was!
Do you remember that game? What was your favorite moment?
