Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi recently revealed how the club wanted to sign Luis Diaz and Vinicius Jr, which caused a stir among supporters on social media.
What's the story?
The Chloorkop outfit are known for scouting players in South America and in recent years, found great success in doing so. With little to nothing known about them, players such as Leonardo Castro, Ricardo Nascimento and Gaston Sirino went on to become top stars in the PSL.
South American Flavour
As one of their most recent signings, Downs acquired the signature of Bolivian star Erwin Saavedra, who will join a star-studded midfield department.
That said, Mngqithi dropped a couple of bombshells at the recent Nedbank Cup media day as he told the media about their scouting network.
Elite Stars
While mentioning that they have lost a number of players while scouting, including that of Luis Diaz, who recently made the move from Porto to English giants, Liverpool. The Sundowns mentor said that the club delayed proceedings for one or two days and subsequently signed for Porto.
Mngqithi also said that the club had Vinicius Jr on their list and that they were trying to chase him. Mentioning that they had 'slept on him', the Brazilian was then signed by Real Madrid the next day.
Here's how the fans reacted to Mngqithi's comments:
