In today's edition of Supporters Club Did You Know, we bring you the fascinating story of how Sporting Lisbon came to be named, and it's not how you would expect...
The club was originally called Campo Grande Football Club, and, once, during a derby with a local rival, the referee awarded a penalty to Campo Grande. However, their captain protested the decision as he thought the penalty was not fair (even though it was to his benefit), so, as he stepped up to take the spot-kick, he decided to kick it in the opposite direction because he did not want to win that way. Because of this fantastic display of sportsmanship, the team's name was changed to Sporting Lisbon.
