Hunt: Why Sundowns Will Continue To Dominate

Hunt: Why Sundowns Will Continue To Dominate

SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt says Mamelodi Sundowns will continue to dominate the PSL for the "next few years" following their sixth consecutive league title.

SuperSport have improved tremendously since Hunt returned for his second spell at the beginning of the season, as they are competing for CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup places, with two games remaining of the season.

However, like everybody else, they were long out of contention for the title, as Sundowns wrapped up a sixth straight league title with seven matches remaining.

Hunt was asked what they need to do to close the huge gap behind the Brazilians and suggested that they could pack a better punch if they were to get six or so players they have sold to them over the years.

"Look, give us five or six players back from Sundowns and we'll show you, you know what I mean? Then we'll show you where we can go," Hunt told journalists at the club's training ground.

"It's unfortunate but we'll have to find new ones, that's my game, we'll get younger ones in, find a team that is competitive and try close the gap. I mean they set the bar so high now," he said.

The multiple league-winning coach, however, believes Sundowns will continue to dominate in the coming few years because "there is not enough players out there" to balance things out.

"I don't think anybody is gonna catch them in the next few years, that's for sure, but we need to get closer, make it more competitive, which we will do," he went on.

"We make the games competitive but it's not (only) about against them, we need to be competitive against everybody and that's where the difference is in the league.

"It's all very well when you play against the league champions, you make it competitive but when we play (against) two bottom teams, we took two or three points off them, there is the problem, we need to be winning those games," he said.

"But the league is very competitive, it will get competitive (but) I don't think there's enough players out there that we can get a little bit equal, it will be an ongoing grind but we'll try our best to try get closer every game," he added.
