The Brazilians hold the slight advantange coming into the second leg after claiming an away goal in 1-1 draw at Orlando Stadium last weekend.
Sundowns last reached the final of this competition in 2022, but ended up losing to the Buccaneers, while their last triumph came in 2021.
Miguel Cardoso was able to rest a number of first-team regulars during Sundowns' 2-0 win over Magesi FC on Wednesday evening.
Pirates, meanwhile, ended a three-game winless run in all competitions after defeating Stellenbosch FC 1-0 in the Betway Premiership on Tuesday evening.
The win did come at a cost as full-back Deano van Rooyen picked up an injury and will miss this afternoon's clash.
