Bafana could not get back to winning ways after a 1-1 draw against Nigeria last Friday.
Themba Zwane broke the deadlock for Hugo Broos' charges on the half-hour mark but Oluwafisayo Dele-Bashiru levelled matters for the Super Eagles just a minute from the break.
South Africa find themselves lying fourth in Group C, three points behind Benin, who pulled off a shock 2-1 win over Nigeria on Monday.
Zimbabwe, on the other hand, suffered an upset against neighbors Lesotho last Friday after a 2-0 defeat.
The Warriors slipped to the bottom of the section with two points, two points behind Bafana.
The last time the sides met was in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers where Bafana narrowly won 1-0 at FNB Stadium thanks to a goal by Teboho Mokoena in the reverse fixture after a goalless draw in Harare.
