Solid Six: Chiefs' Contract Countdowns

With many Kaizer Chiefs players' contracts set to expire in June 2025, Amakhosi have begun strategising for the futures of six of their first team players.

Insiders with knowledge of the club's plans have indicated that these discussions are understood to revolve around captain Yusuf Maart, midfielder George Matlou, the recently injured Edmilson Dove, right-back Reeve Frosler, striker Ranga Chivaviro, and the long-term injured midfielder, Edson Castillo.

Siya sources added that while a few of these players are set to remain at Amakhosi, others face uncertain futures as the technical team aims to build a competitive squad with a blend of youth and experience.

"For now we can talk about all the six though it's different for Yusuf Maart and Reeve Frosler as they have already been offered new contracts to stay at the club. The situation is a bit tricky for Edson (Castillo) now," said the Siya source close to the club.

"At first they had offered to extend his contract but then things have changed after his injury, with the player also expressing the desire to leave after his contract runs out. That's almost the same situation with Ranga (Chivaviro).

"The club had shown an interest to renew his contract at the start of the season but things are changing bit by bit due to his dwindling form at the moment. As for Edmilson Dove and George Matlou they renewed for one year at the start of the season until June 2025 and it seems that's the end of the road for them.

"But the club is busy right now discussing the futures of all these players and by the end of January we would know who is staying and who is going though it's clear for others," the insider added.

A second Siya source reiterated that the club is working on trimming the squad, as requested by head coach Nasreddine Nabi.

"The reason why most of these players won't have contracts renewed is also because they want to have a small manageable squad of at least about 25 players, baring in mind that they are looking at adding two or three players during the January transfer window period so they have to cut off a few players to have that balance and that's why they are set to release a few as well," the insider stated.

So far this season, only Maart, Frosler, Chivaviro, and the injured Castillo have seen game time. Meanwhile, Dove and Matlou are still in the recovery processes from their respective injuries.

Attempts to contact Chiefs for an official comment on these players have gone unanswered at the time of publication.
