The announcement made by Stellenbosch FC last week that defender Fawaz Basadien has penned a new long-term contract does not mean the door is closed on a potential move to one of the Big Three clubs, the Siya crew understands.
As previously reported by this publication, the former Moroka Swallows left back has been on the radar of both Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns.
But with the January transfer window usually complex and a challenge for a lot of teams to get deals over the line, the two clubs did not pursue Basadien at the time – allowing Stellies to tie him down to new terms.
Information gathered by the Siya crew, however, indicates that part of the reason the side from the Winelands moved swiftly and accelerated discussions with Basadien was to avoid losing him on a free at the end of next season.
Although there was still ample time, the 27-year-old would have been in a position to sign for any club of his choice in January 2025. But with his stock rising, Stellies felt it was important to show intent and propose a new deal.
This now puts the club in the driving seat, with Basadien now on their books for the long-term and only able to leave for a sizeable transfer fee.
Following his call-up to Bafana Bafana's 50-man preliminary squad for the Afcon the player was even more noticeable.
It's understood the interest in his services remains, but a move is only possible if all parties involved are satisfied with any potential bid.
