Sekhukhune United have a big decision to make on midfield maestro Sibusiso Vilakazi's future as he is nearing the end of his contract. The experienced star has been on the side's books for almost a year and has been lauded for his influence in guiding the youngsters in the dressing room.
Having initially signed a short-term deal on his arrival in March last year, 'Vila' had the one-year option to extend his contract exercised at the end of last season. After a good start to 2023/24 getting game-time under Brandon Truter, albeit coming off the bench in eight of the team's first 10 league matches of the campaign, things changed for the ex-Mamelodi Sundowns man following the coaching changes towards the end of last year.
The 34-year-old didn't play in the last five league games and has also been a notable absentee from the starting line-ups in the CAF Confederation Cup in recent matches. According to sources, he and the club could come to an agreement to part ways.
"Vilakazi is facing an uncertain future with Sekhukhune. For a player of his quality and experience, it isn't good that he isn't getting regular game-time, and the club is considering allowing him to assess other options," said one source.
"Moreover, the player is nearing the end of his contract. He signed a one-year contract extension at the end of last season, and because of his situation with lack of game-time, the club is unlikely to offer him a new deal," the source added.
