Ofori & Pirates Make Compromise Deal?

After negotiations reportedly took place between Orlando Pirates and goalkeeper Richard Ofori, Siya sources now indicate that the two parties have apparently finally agreed on a new three-year deal for the Ghanaian international.

As previously reported before by Soccer Laduma and the Siya crew, Pirates wanted to keep the star player.

Now, according to Siya sources at the club, the former Maritzburg United shot stopper wanted a better salary package and the two parties are believed to have reached a compromise.

The source added that while the club supposedly did not give Ofori what he initially wanted, it is at least an improvement when compared to what he had when he first joined Pirates from Maritzburg.

"Believe me, the new deal is done. It's just up to the team to announce but you know how things work at Pirates, mainly if it's renewing a contract.

"They don't like saying it. It's an in house issue. But, yes, they have agreed a new improved deal and Ofori will be one of the best paid players not only at Pirates but in the league as well.

"It's a three-year deal according to the information I have but it could be even more than that with an option to extend or things like that," the source said.

Another Siya source added that one of the main reasons for this contract extension was to increase the competition among the goalkeepers as they will have three top class stoppers from next season.

"What they said was they apparently want to be like Mamelodi Sundowns where they have (Ronwen) Williams, (Kennedy) Mweene and (Dennis) Onyango, all top class and anyone can be called upon at any time to step in and step up.

"(Pirates) will be playing in the CAF Champions League, DStv Premiership, MTN 8, Carling Cup and the Nedbank Cup so they said they need top goalkeepers, (and players) in every competition hence they made sure they kept Ofori for another three years," the source added.

Ofori joined Pirates in 2020 for an initial three-year deal which is expected to expire on June 30.

Since joining the club, he has played over 35 league games with 10 of those coming this season. His campaign was slowed down by injuries, which also saw him miss the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Efforts were made to get comment from Pirates but they were unavailable at the time of publishing this story.
