February's Future Beyond January Transfer Window

February's Future Beyond January Transfer Window

Despite not seeing much game time at the club, Mamelodi Sundowns appear to be happy to keep goalkeeper Jody February at the club for a longer period, the Siya crew has been informed.

Siya sources at Masandawana have indicated that Sundowns and February are set to enter into negotiations to exercise his one-year option, extending his contract until June 2026.

The sources added that because there was already an option on the contract, the club should decide to trigger that rather than negotiating a new deal altogether.

"The club is showing trust in Jody (February) and that's why they are already exercising his one-year option until June 2026. In June this year the club extended his contract by one year to June 2025 but with another one-year option. That's the one the club is taking up now," the Siya source stated.

A second insider stated that the club is looking to have backup goalkeepers for Ronwen Williams as they anticipate Dennis Onyango's potential retirement.

"Actually, Onyango was supposed to retire this season but with Ricardo Goss being loaned to SuperSport United again, they kept him as a player with February and Reyaad Pieterse being the main challengers as backup or second and third choices. Yes, there is young Sanele Tshabalala but they want to loan him out and that's why they want to keep February longer hence the one-year option," the second source stated.

28-year-old February joined Sundowns from then Ajax Cape Town on a five-year contract until June 2024. However, he has spent most of his time on loans, at Swallows FC and AmaZulu.

Soccer Laduma contacted Sundowns and February's agent for comment on the contract but no response was received by the time this report was published.

Sundowns' potential decision to extend February's contract reflects their intention to maintaining a strong goalkeeping department. By exercising the one-year option, the club ensures they have experienced backup options as they prepare for future transition periods within the squad. February's extended stay will provide stability and depth at the back.
