Latest: Chiefs & Khune's Contract Talks

Kaizer Chiefs are determined to hold onto their legendary keeper Itumeleng Khune, according to insiders privy to information.

Amakhosi and the South African icon have been in talks for a new contract because his current deal expires at the end of this season, the Siya crew understands.

Despite going through a disciplinary hearing in the middle of this current campaign and later being suspended for some time, then attending a special programme at Chiefs, the club is doing all they can to hold onto their star.

Sekhukhune United have been linked to Khune but there has been no confirmation either way whether the shot-stopper would move there to further his playing career. It is expected that remaining at Chiefs would mean moving into a coaching position at Naturena.

Siya sources have indicated that the talks have been positive for Khune to stay at Chiefs.

"The decision is as good as done. They have been talking even during the time he was serving his suspension. They have made it clear that they don't want to lose him and they are standing by their words," said the Siya source.

"They have accepted that mistakes do happen and they are looking at the bigger picture of what he brings to the club whether playing or other duties and that's why they have agreed that he can't leave or they can't let him go. So, as we speak now he is not going anywhere," the source concluded.

A second Siya source stated that although Khune is not playing, the club still regards him as their club captain and discusses his overall value to Amakhosi.

"You know there is a difference between matchday in-game captain and club captain. Khune still remains the club captain and the team respects that. Even the players know that and what he brings to the team is what the club values a lot," said the second Siya source.

"Yes, his contract is coming to an end in June but it doesn't mean the team won't keep him. It's all up to the two parties to agree on whatever they are agreeing and he stays on at the team. It will just depend whether he stays on as a player, coach or in the marketing department as they suggested before in the past, where he could be working with Jessica (Motaung)," the source concluded.

Soccer Laduma contacted Chiefs for a comment but no response was received by the time this story was published.
