It was three years ago that Evidence Makgopa had an opportunity of a lifetime – a possible move from Baroka FC to the heights of the Danish topflight. But a bid believed to be in the region of R15 million was rejected in favour of an offer from Orlando Pirates, which was only a fraction of what the European clubs chasing his signature were willing to put on the table.
Now, the striker's future hangs by a thread, with the Siya crew led to believe there are still talks behind the scenes to request Makgopa goes out on loan to revive his career before it's too late.
The fact that the Buccaneers are yet to offload the forward suggests there's a notion internally that he could still be useful to coach Jose Riveiro over the course of the 2023/24 season.
But in reality, he has only featured in two matches off the bench, and that is telling on its own that a player once the leading man for coach Hugo Broos in the early days of the Belgian's appointment as Bafana Bafana coach has fallen way down the pecking order at the Houghton-based outfit.
Soccer Laduma has previously reported that Makgopa was wanted by Chippa United in a possible reunion with coach Morgan Mammila. But it was his teammate and midfielder Goodman Mosele who was allowed to leave on loan to join the Gqeberha side instead.
Siya sources have indicated that there's a very small chance Makgopa will be sent out for game-time elsewhere at this stage, but with the window still open, anything is possible given the nature of last-minute negotiations.
