Will Cross' Injury Change Chiefs' January Transfer Window?

Will Cross' Injury Change Chiefs' January Transfer Window?

GQEBERHA, SOUTH AFRICA - NOVEMBER 16: Marcelo Allende and Bradley Cross of Kaizer Chiefs vie for the ball during the Home of Legends Cup, final match between Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on November 16, 2024 in Gqeberha, South Africa. With Kaizer Chiefs having suffered another injury setback after the confirmation that left-back Bradley Cross will be sidelined for nearly two months, the Siya crew investigates how this will effect the club's January transfer window plans.

Cross' injury was suffered during their 2-0 defeat against Polokwane City away in the PSL on Sunday.

However, the club is not hitting the panic button, confident in their depth in the left-back position.

Sources within the club indicated that there is believed to be no plans to recruit a new left back in January or anytime soon, as Chiefs are confident they have sufficient cover. With players like Bongani Sam, Edmilson Dove, and Happy Mashiane available, along with other adaptable teammates, the Glamour Boys see no need for a hurried signing in the left-back department.

"No, the club won't be looking at signing a left back. If there is a position that won't be a problem to fill up, that is left back. You know this season Happy Mashiane has played some games there, and Bongani Sam is ready to play. They didn't just want to rush him from injury but in two to three weeks he can play 90 minutes," said the Siya source.

"Yes, Edmilson Dove can play there but he hasn't fully recovered and maybe by the time he starts kicking the ball then Bradley (Cross) will be back. But as for panicking or signing a new player - no, that's out! There is enough backup in the left back position,' the source added.

Additionally, another insider noted that the club has solid backup from their DDC team too, with players ready to step up when needed.

"Actually with the DDC league already on a break, Nkosana Mbuthu and Ofentse Kgosana will continue to train with the first team and any of these two can easily move into the first team and play in that left back position (if needed). So, the team has enough cover for the injured Cross and they won't panic. But you know, Thatayaone Ditlhokwe can also play in that position? Or if worse comes to worse then Rushwin Dortley can be another cover. So, no (signing needed), the options are there," the second insider stated.

Attempts to contact Chiefs for an official comment were unsuccessful at the time of publishing this story.

As Amakhosi manage their current injury challenges, their focus on existing talent within the squad underscores their strategic approach to team stability. The club's confidence in their depth reflects a commitment to nurturing and developing players from within, ensuring they remain competitive throughout the season.
