Zungu, Tau & Phiri In Quarantine...

A trio of Bafana Bafana players who have returned home to South Africa from their respective clubs in Europe are now in quarantine.

Bongani Zungu and Lebo Phiri, both playing in France, as well as Belgium-based Percy Tau arrived back in the country last night from their different destinations with their 2019/20 seasons ended early because of the Coronavirus pandemic, but face up to 14 days in a quarantine site at an unnamed Sandton hotel.

Zungu plays for Amiens in the French Ligue 1 and his club was subsequently relegated following the decision to declare the campaign, with 11 matches to go, null and void despite their argument that they had a fighting chance.

Phiri is on the books of EA Guingamp in Ligue 2 and he, too, was affected by the French government's decision to suspend all sport until September.

In Belgium, Tau received his championship winners' medal when the Jupiler Pro League was scrapped with one game to go and Club Brugge, a team the Bafana striker joined at the start of the campaign, declared champions.

Last week, SAFA president Danny Jordaan had told journalists that Zungu and Tau had asked for the association to help them get back home. But the Siya crew has confirmed with SAFA spokesperson Dominic Chimhavi that the association was not involved in assisting the trio to get back to SA.

Meanwhile, Keagan Dolly, another French-based player at Montpellier, confirmed last week that he'd decided to remain in Europe with his fiancé and near his club to prepare for pre-season later next month.

Zungu could have opted to come home because he is likely to leave Amiens with several offers from other clubs in Europe with his contract due to run out in June 2021. Tau is also in a similar boat given that he is on loan to Brugge from Brighton and Hove Albion in the English Premier League.
