Judged By Millions Or Goals? How Tau Fared At Al Ahly

Judged By Millions Or Goals? How Tau Fared At Al Ahly

With Percy Tau's days reportedly numbered at Al Ahly, Soccer Laduma analyses whether the South African lived up to expectations in the past three seasons.

Multiple reports emanating from Egypt have been consistent that the Red Devils do not hold Tau in their immediate future plans, with the 30-year-old's contract expiring in June next year.

Having lost his place in the line-up, the Egyptian giants are reported to have offered the Bafana Bafana forward a settlement offer to terminate his contract and become a free agent in January, which 'The Lion of Judah''s representatives reportedly turned down.

As a result, Tau leaving Cairo is almost a foregone conclusion, with the big question on whether he would run down his contract or leave on a settlement agreement to terminate the contract early.

The former Brighton and Hove Albion striker arrived at Al Ahly with a mixture of high expectations and doubt in August 2021 and under former coach Pitso Mosimane he revived his career in the 2021/22 campaign, where he managed to score eight goals and provided six assists in 34 appearances in all competitions.

However, the market seemingly expected a better return from Tau, as his valuation dropped from €3million to €2 million [R54,6 million to R36 million] post that campaign.

The Egyptian media were critical of the former Mamelodi Sundowns forward even in the 2022/23 season, especially without Mosimane but he slightly improved his contribution after netting 10 goals and had seven assists in 42 games in all tournaments.

However, in terms of market value, Tau dropped to €1,5 million [R27,3 million] post the 2022/23 term.

In terms of his offering on the pitch, the Witbank native was unable to take his game to another level in the 2023/24 season, after scoring nine goals and did not have any assists in 33 matches.

Tau's market value, although it hovered around €1,8 million [R32,8 million] in April this year, his valuation dropped again to €1,5 million [R27, 3 million] at the end of the last campaign and has been sitting in that figure from the last update in October.

After falling out of favour with head coach Marcel Koller at the beginning of the current season, the 30-year-old's numbers and value could reach an all-time low, at least since he moved to the land of Pharaoh in August 2021.
