Hlongwane was included in the Minnesota starting line-up, while Messi lined up for Miami, who were without veteran striker Luis Suarez.
The former Maritzburg United star opened the scoring for the home side in the 32nd minute with his first league goal of the season.
Hlongwane was also voted Man of the Match for his display.
