Bongani Zungu running out of time at Rangers

Bongani Zungu running out of time at Rangers

Bongani Zungu's chances of making his R50.8m stay at Glasgow Rangers a permanent one, could be dwindling.

Zungu, who secured a deadline day transfer to Steven Gerrard's side from Amiens in June 2020, recently found himself in hot water with the club.

Scottish media reported that Zungu along with four of his teammates breached COVID-19 protocols in Scotland after attending a party – and as a result, the quintet have been dropped by Gerrard and placed under isolation and will face fines and further punishment by Rangers.

The latest blotch does not bode well for the 28-year-old who is in a bid to convince the Liverpool legend that his £2.5m (±R50.8m) should be made a permanent one at Ibrox.

Apart from his off the field misdemeanors, it is on the field where Zungu has largely failed to make an impact.

Zungu has made 16 appearances in total for Gerrard's side this campaign, 12 of them as a sub, while he has started four matches. A worrying factor for the former Mamelodi Sundowns man is that he has not completed a full 90 minutes in any of the matches he has started.

Gerrard has mostly used Zungu as a second half sub, coming on to help Rangers see out several victories from winning positions, but the Bafana Bafana midfielder is yet to convince Gerrard that he is deserving of a regular starting berth.

With his loan deal set to come to an end in June 2021, time is fast running out for Zungu as he tries to secure a long-term future with Rangers.
